Epidemiological data are gathered using a comprehensive research process that includes the review of relevant scientific literature, national datasets and reports from private organizations. On a case-by-case basis, we also interview leading epidemiologists to discover recent trends, e.g., the effects of newly introduced disease prevention programs. Our analyses typically cover the seven main pharmaceutical markets: USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and Japan. Specific analyses for other regions are available upon request. When indicated, the general population is broken down by age and gender. Population forecasts are based on national census data; missing points are interpolated using polynomial regression methods.
Incidence and prevalence measures are used to derive the potential treatable patient population. We assemble information from multiple sources that are periodically reviewed to ensure currency and accuracy. Whenever possible, patients are segmented into subcategories based on severity of disease or other apparent attributes. Finally, we also consider diagnostic and treatment rates as well as treatment patterns. This information feeds patient-flow models that allow our clients to trace patients from the first physician visit and first-line therapy through multiple disease stages and lines of therapy. As a result, new therapies can be directly targeted to specific market segments.
